Treating Hormonal Acne in Older Women
When analyzing a client's skin to customize their home care and treatment regimen, we look at ten different things before making recommendations for them. They are:
1. Is it an Acne Imposter?
2. Skin Type
3. Acne Type
4. Acne Severity
5. Skin Conditions
6. Other Skin Conditions (Proceed With Caution)
7. Skin Sensitivity
8. Fitzpatrick Type
9. Environmental Conditions
In the case of hormonal breakouts in an older woman, we know that the "cause" of acne is the same - retention hyperkeratosis - and we will base part of our recommendations on that. It's all about using the right products in the right way to keep the dead skin cell-buildup in the pore in check. Hormonal changes will make the acne-prone worse but is not the cause.
However, we need to take many other things in mind to give this client the best home care for her.
In this client's case we looked at:
(3.) Acne Type - Is it inflamed or noninflamed acne? Most often, hormonal acne is inflamed (but not always). We will choose anti-bacterial products if that is the case.
(5.) Skin Conditions - Is the client dry and dehydrated? If so, we will need to address that first before giving them active topicals that could exacerbate that problem.
(7.) Skin Sensitivity - What actives can the client tolerate? We will need to do a skin sensitivity test to be sure.
(8.) Fitzpatrick Type - In this case, we see that she is about a Fitzpatrick 5 and we will definitely have to take that into consideration when developing a home care routine for her. If not, we could make her hyperpigmentation way worse.
(9.) Environmental Conditions - Is she in a dry and/or cold climate? That could affect our product choices as well.
(10.) Age - As we age, we tend to produce less oil. If we don't take that into consideration, our choices could irritate and dehydrate her skin.
We chose a mild anti-bacterial regimen with a gentle cleansing (non-active) regimen. We adjusted her home care every two weeks to make sure her skin did not over-adapt to the routine. Her results were beautiful:
